Budget Crisis Hits Social Service Agencies

SEIU 73 Fights Back Against Unfair Budget Cuts

This Spring, the Illinois legislature failed to honor its commitment to disabled and elderly people. The budget it passed has led to cuts, site shut downs and layoffs at the social service agencies, like the Jewish Federation, that provide vital services for those in need.

After much lobbying and numerous mass protests, on July 15th, a measure passed which will temporarily restore partial social service funding.

SEIU Local 73 will continue its actions to fight the cuts. We must unite with ALL social service agencies and workers to win: (1) a progressive state income tax increase and (2) new federal stimulus funds that include aid to state governments.

Call your state senators, state reps and US congressmen. Get involved in direct action and coalition building.

We must fight back for ourselves, our families, and for the people in need whom we serve.

It is up to us to demand sanity and decency from the state government.

Call Paul Siegel or Nick Carone if you want to get involved in your Union’s fight.
