A New Direction – New Union Leadership

SEIU Local 73 services Jewish Federation of Metropolitian Chicago workers

Since fall 2008, Local 73 has taken responsibility for all implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between SEIU Local 20 and The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.

This servicing agreement reflects a plan to provide the most effective possible service and empowerment to our members in the not-for-profit social service sector in Illinois and Northern Indiana.

Budget Crisis Hits Social Service Agencies

SEIU Local 73 Fights Back Against Unfair Budget Cuts

This Spring, the Illinois legislature failed to honor its commitment to disabled and elderly people. The budget it passed has led to cuts, site shut downs and layoffs at the social service agencies, like the Jewish Federation, that provide vital services for those in need.

After much lobbying and numerous protests, on July 15th, a measure passed which will temporarily restore partial social service funding.

SEIU 73 Wins Reduction in Medical Costs

In June 2009, a JCFS Steward contacted SEIU 73 because management had raised the employee contribution for individual HMO coverage.

Management made this change based on a fall in the cost of living (COL) due to the recession.

Your Local 73 representatives contacted management, and the Union pointed out that the contract protects against unfair increases in single employee costs when the “COL” goes up, but the contract does not provide for cost increases to members if the “COL” goes down.

Questions? Concerns? Issues?
Call the Member Resource Center

As part of a dynamic 1.9 million member international Union, our social service units can benefit from lessons learned and models developed by other locals of SEIU.  An important new innovation, being implemented by Local 73 is the Members Service Center (MSC).
