SEIU 73 Wins Reduction in Medical Costs
In June 2009, a JCFS Steward contacted SEIU 73 because management had raised the employee contribution for individual HMO coverage.
Management made this change based on a fall in the cost of living (COL) due to the recession. Your Local 73 representatives contacted management, and the Union pointed out that the contract protects against unfair increases in single employee costs when the “COL” goes up, but the contract does not provide for cost increases to members if the “COL” goes down.
Management agreed to cancel the increase so that single HMO members will pay $9.97 less per month than management had originally implemented. Medical costs, including family coverage, will continue to be an important concern for SEIU Local 73.
We have settled other grievances favorably and some grievances are being taken to impartial arbitration.
In another victory, management agreed that a supervisor cannot find “reasonable suspicion” of drug and alcohol use on the basis of unreliable secondhand information.
REMEMBER – Contact your Steward or one of your SEIU Local 73 Representatives if you want to file a grievance.
IMPORTANT!
Grievances must be filed within 10 working days of a violation of your rights as a Union Member.
