Argonne Charged With Violating Law
Argonne National Laboratory has been charged by the National Labor Relations Board with violating Federal labor law. The NLRB has issued a complaint against Argonne for violating workers and the union’s rights when it comes to attending grievances hearings.
The violations came after Argonne refused to hear grievances if more than one Union official was at the hearing.
Argonne attempted to say that it was a “past practice”, one of the weakest arguments that can be claimed. However that argument does not apply when it comes to what Federal law requires employers to abide by, including allowing union officials in the room to hear member’s grievances.
Federal Law does not allow employers to dictate who can be at hearings nor how many union officials can attend. Nonetheless, Argonne decided to ignore the law and has now been charged by the NLRB.
SEIU Local 73 and your local chapter officers have been working with the board on the upcoming hearing dated for April 27, 2009. If Argonne does not change its illegal ways and come to an agreement that allows unfettered access to members grievances, the union and chapter officers are prepared to go to trial.
