DIVISION UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2009

THE ECONOMY AND OUR JOBS

We are living through one of the most challenging periods in recent U.S. history. The downturn in the economy is having an adverse impact on public sector budget deficits -- and our jobs.
We are faced with the threat of layoffs, loss of jobs from school closings, less tolerance, more discipline, a decrease in student populations and a host of other issues.
As we move forward into 2010, we need to address these issues so that we can lessen the negative impact on us and our families.
We have some ideas but we would like to hear your thoughts as well.
We will be holding a CPS division meeting on March 20, 2010, to discuss these and other issues.
Additional information about this meeting will be posted on the Web site as soon as it is  available.

SECURITY TRAINING PROGRAM

On a more positive note, we have heard from many of our brothers and sisters that are security staff informing us that they are pleased with the security training they have received this year.
The smaller training sessions create an atmosphere for more individualized interaction between trainers and the security staff.
Most of the trainers are former CPS security officers or security aides. Thus, they have had hands-on experience and can relate to the challenges that security personnel face every day.
The union has fought long and hard with CPS to develop a physical intervention policy and we were finally successful. The result of that success has translated into a more comprehensive physical intervention training program.
