Unit II / City of Chicago briefs

(Originally published in the January 2010 SEIU Local 73 newsletter)

Congratulations for a job well done to the Unit II negotiating team and the members for voting to ratify their contract, thereby preventing layoffs of over 300 union brothers and sisters. In addition, Unit II workers received a 6.25 percent  increase, which was effective August 1, 2009.
Of course, we had to give up something to get something in this high-stakes battle with Mayor Daley. These concessions were made in the face of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression and we will fight to reverse them in future negotiations.
For the first time ever, Crossing Guards will be getting a re-grade on July 1, 2010. This means nearly a 5 percent increase.
We will keep Traffic Control Aides posted on the fight concerning the forced transfers of Loop TCA’s.
Supervisors at Animal Control are now unionized. Thanks to all who participated in the drive. Also, Animal Control Officers will be switching from six days on, two days off to five days on, two days off.
