UIC CLERICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE MEMBERS: BARGAINING UPDATE

NOW IT’S TIME TO TURN UP THE HEAT ON MANAGEMENT AND
PREPARE FOR A STRIKE VOTE!

     Our bargaining committee has scheduled a series of meetings to inform the membership on the current state of contract negotiations and to discuss our possible next steps, including a strike authorization vote. We want to bring everyone up to speed on how this might play out and what a strike authorization vote would mean for members.

HOW DID WE GET TO THIS POINT?
--- Our contract expired on August 26, 2009.
--- Management has stalled, saying no to any of our economic or non-economic proposals.
--- Management has refused to discuss the significant erosion of our Clerical bargaining unit by Academic Professionals.
--- Management has informed us that there will be significant layoffs and bumping within the Clerical unit this spring and that additional layoffs and bumping may be necessary.

     University management believes that the current Clerical contract is just fine and that no new wage increases are necessary, given the economic climate. We believe that the university is not negotiating in good faith with us and that management is not giving us respect for the work we do. Just a few months ago, the Urbana Champaign Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) negotiated a 10-percent wage increase over the next three years. This deal was achieved after the GEO went on strike for two days.
     Brothers and Sisters, we need to stand up and fight for what we want just like the graduate students did and that is why we need to seriously consider taking a strike authorization vote.
